Exercise More Fun When Friends Join You, New Research Shows

Exercise May Lower C-Reactive Protein

Eight times a day, participants received a prompt on their phone that asked them what they were doing, who they were with, where they were, and if they were outdoors, how much “greenness” was in the area. They also rated how happy they were , and how much they were enjoying the activity they were doing. About 84 people reported at least one bout of physical activity over the four days. [ 10 Fitness Apps: Which Is Best for Your Personality? ] Those doing physical activity were happier, and enjoyed the physical activity more, when they were with their spouse, friends or co-workers, compared with when they were alone, according to the findings. People also said they were happier when they were exercising outdoors in green areas.

Not really, says Quentin Letts in theDaily Mail. He describes it as “a PR exercise nothing secret was uttered but a riveting one all the same”. He compares the scene to Skyfall, describing the three spooks Sir John Sawers, head of MI6; Andrew Parker, head of MI5; and Sir Iain Lobban, head of GCHQ as ‘M’, ‘C’ and ‘GCHQ’. “Until recently they would have been MYOB mind your own business but doing some ‘front-of-house’ stuff is now de rigueur.” But The Guardian, which itself came under fire by the chiefs for publishing Snowden’s leaks, says: “There was no Bond villain, no white cat, no steel-rimmed bowler hats just a gentle 90 minutes of polite questioning in which little was demanded or gleaned.” There were many reassurances offered and accusations of improper behaviour were rejected but “no MP or peer seriously tested any of these assertions”, says the newspaper.

These data and conclusions should be considered to be preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal. There is a significant inverse relationship between self-reported vigorous-intensity physical activity and elevated levels of C-reactive protein. LOS ANGELES — Individuals who vigorously exercise significantly reduce the odds that they will have high levels of C-reactive protein — a marker of inflammation in the body, researchers reported here. If a person exercised vigorously less than 500 MET (metabolic equivalents) per week, there was a 27% reduction in the odds of having elevated C-reactive protein levels (odds ratio [OR] 0.72, 95% CI 0.59-0.88, P=0.002) when compared with non-exercisers, said lead author Michael Richardson, BSH , a graduate assistant at Brooks College of Health at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. In his poster presentation at the annual meeting of the World Congress on Insulin Resistance , Richardson also noted that if a person did 500 METs or more per week, the risk reduction was 33% (OR 0.67, 95% CI 0.53-0.84, P=0.001).

Spy chiefs grilled: PR exercise or triumph for transparency?

Dr. Lee and colleagues in a study examined the effects of aerobic exercise versus resistance exercise alone on visceral adipose tissue ( a type of fat tissue that surrounds internal organs in the abdominal cavity) intrahepatic lipid (within the liver) and insulin sensitivity in obese girls. For the study researchers recruited 44 obese girls (BMI >95th, 12-18 yrs) that were assigned at random to one of three groups; 60 minutes of aerobic exercise three days a week for three months, either running on a treadmill or using an elliptical trainer. Second group; participated in aerobic exercise program, doing 10 whole body resistance exercises using weight machines over the course of each hour-long session at three days a week for three months and the last group was asked not to participate in any structured physical activity program over the course of the study. Prior to starting the exercise program all participants underwent a detailed physical exam that including measuring their total fat, visceral fat, liver fat, and fat embedded in their muscles by various noninvasive means. Measurements of ‘ insulin sensitivity (how sensitive the body is to the effects of insulin) and basic health measures including weight and physical activity were also taken.
